Heywood Station

6990 Witherslack Hall runs around the 11.30 train for Rawtenstall
VIP / Inspection saloon 6320 stands ready, having been chartered for a birthday party.
Saloon 6320 has been owned by The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust since 2001. It is the only 60ft LMS inspection saloon in existence.

Heywood Station: looking east with water crane
The track beyond this point is not in regular use, but is vital to the East Lancashire Railway as the only link to the national rail system, so is used for locomotive transfer purposes. The ELR is trying to extend its services to Castleton on the old L&Y main line between Manchester and Rochdale, but this is not easy as it would involve ELR running over metals used by other services, and joint use of Castleton Network Rail station, (or perhaps construction of a separate Castleton station for ELR trains). In Germany or Holland such problems would be easily resolved, but...this is England!

Heywood Station
A train of the East Lancashire Railway has arrived, and its diesel locomotive (No D1501) is running round the train prior to returning to Rawtenstall via Bury. Heywood station was not part of the original East Lancashire Railway, but was on the Central Lancashire line of the L&Y company. It is reached via a new bridge built at Bury over the top of the Metrolink tram line.

A` first sight, these look somewhat meagre, but further along the platform there is an enclosed waiting room with toilets, and usually at least a warm drink can be purchased.

Apologies for the repetition, but I love this locomotive, and the picture worked well. Luckily the sun stopped shining for a while, and the shadows melted way.
