Costessey village sign
The sign is surmounted by a short length of rope which refers to a tale about three men who were to be hanged. They were offered a reprieve if they could come up with a knot whereby they could all be hanged at once using the same knot. They produced what is known as “The Staffordshire Knot” but that is all folk law and is ‘knot’ substantiated. The main feature on the sign is Costessey Hall, a Tudor mansion built for Sir Henry Jerningham after Queen Mary granted him the Manor. An expansion scheme was too ambitious to succeed and the hall finished up as a ruin in the middle of Costessey golf course. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6689336
