The serpentine wall in Harvey Lane
Much rebuilt, this Grade 2 listed wall > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6193022 dates from the early 19th century and is believed to have been part of the wall enclosing the Thorpe Lodge Estate. Today the Eden Close terrace is sheltering behind it. Serpentine walls are also known as crinkle crankle walls, a term originating from the Suffolk dialect and describing substantial brick walls which are serpentine, or sinuously curving, in form. Sometimes they are also known as ‘ribbon walls'. In their most traditional form they were built as a single line of bricks, with the sinuous design removing the need for buttressing, because the serpentine shape provided its own stability.

Broadland District Council Emergency Centre - emergency exit
Steel ladder leading up from the lower level to a steel hatch at groundlevel if no other exit is possible. The hatch is being serviced at regular intervals and kept fully functional.
