The South kiln - detail
The roof had once been experimentally covered with wire netting and then plastered in an attempt to reduce repairs caused by the heat. Much of the protective layer that once covered the domed roof has deteriorated. The body of the kiln is held together by a number of steel bands but one of the steel bands which once held the structure together has loosened. Corrugated iron sheeting sheltered its wall and buck arches were placed cross-wise across the centre of the dome. (Source: Lowestoft Archaeological & Local History Society, April 1979)
