Southtown St Mary?s church
From the outside, there is nothing particularly attractive about this church. It was built by the early Victorians in 1831 in white brick with dressed flint flushwork. There is no tower, but two fine pinnacles point skyward at the west end of the nave. Entrance to the nave is through the west porch; above, on the gable, is a Madonna and Child. Inside, it is spacious, without internal columnar supports for the roof. The tall windows north and south let the available light flood into this brightly decorated church. The small octagonal font is contemporary with the church and has carved decoration on the faces of the bowl. The pulpit also dates from the same period. There is a piscina and three-seat stepped sedilia, although they went out of use centuries before this church was built. Alas, it is only open during services.
