Aircrew crash-site memorial
The aircraft, a Wellington II, W5444, PH/T piloted by Charles McVeigh was trying to return to Binbrook after taking part in a sortie over Köln, Germany. Due to damage the pilot was looking for a suitable landing site, probably Little Snoring. Already fighting to maintain height above tree level, on seeing some lights and thinking it may be an aerodrome dropped down only to find the lights were railway signalling lights and crashed into a railway bridge at Briston (at TG 04881 32704).
Of the crew of six, three were killed and the others were taken to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and survived.
Had it not been for a 2,000 lb bomb which was "hung-up" in the bomb bay they may have made it home.
