12-14 Old Palace Road - Gurdwara Shri Guru Ram Das Prakash
The Gurdwara Shri Guru Ram Das Prakash is the Norwich Sikh Temple. The building is currently being renovated and extended. The temple was founded by Chanan Singh Suwali, who was one of the first Sikhs to settle in Norwich. Born in Galotian Kalan in India hemoved to England in 1954 and later settled in Norwich. He was well known in the Sikh community throughout the country and had a large extended family, being a father of nine, grandfather of 29 and great-grandfather of 19. In 1976 he had brought the Guru Granth Sahib Ji - the holy scripture in the Sikh faith - to his home where he devoted a room to it as a temple. In 2000, he started fundraising with the community to get the money needed to purchase a suitable building and ten years later, in October 2010, the first Sikh temple in Norfolk was opened in Old Palace Road in Norwich. Mr Chanan Singh Suwali was its founder and president until his passing in May 2015.
