Plane trees in Earlham Road
The trees growing here are London planes (Platanus x hispanica). The London plane is thought to be a hybrid of the oriental plane and the American plane, and was introduced into the UK from Spain in the 17th century. The bark of this tree flakes off, exposing new bark underneath, and the faster the tree grows the more bark it sheds. This shedding is a form of self-cleansing which was considered to be important during the industrial revolution.
