Longlands Model Farm - Steam Engine
Holkham Estate has a long pedigree of outstanding agricultural innovation. The Longlands model farm complex contains elements of early buildings, however a majority dates to the 1850s, with minor 20th century additions. The farm incorporated the latest design and technology to improve efficiency on the estate.
The steam engine, installed in 1914, was built by Garretts in the Leiston Engine Works, Suffolk. Motive power was required to power the sawmill and other farm machinery via a belt shaft. The engine ceased work in the early 1960s.
The farm buildings, currently listed, are undergoing refurbishment to provide a 21st century purpose. Monica Vinader, a well known jewellery manufacturer has recently moved onto the site.

Longlands Farm, Holkham Estate
An example of a model farm with a Garrett single cylinder overtype steam engine that used to drive farm machinery. This is now a very rare in situ survivor in a farm setting. It is not part of the public experience and permission should be sought to see it.
