The Buttlands is a large ‘village green’ area ringed by lime trees. Several elegant Georgian houses overlook the square, as do the Crown Hotel, the Globe Inn and the town’s Roman Catholic Church. Although the title deeds of The Buttlands go back to 1691, ownership of the land was conveyed to Thomas, Earl of Leicester in 1758 and it remained in possession of the same family until 1937 when the title deeds were presented to the townspeople. Although perhaps not immediately obvious this completely functional deckchair is a sculptural item and, as such, it is much larger than normal size.

We found this pub refreshingly unspoilt, unpretentious and friendly.

A quieter area of this town is The Buttlands, a large ‘village green’ area ringed by lime trees. In one corner of this square is the late C19th Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea in red-brick Dutch style.
