The North Dining Room at Holkham is a 27-foot cube, and the Axminster carpet exactly matches the pattern on the ceiling above.

Holkham Hall, Holkham
Home of the Earl and Countess of Leicester, whose family have lived here since the 1750s. A really lovely house to visit. Many years ago I had played cricket on the pitch at the back of the house, from where the photograph has been taken. See http://www.holkham.co.uk/

Inscription at Holkham Hall
Above the entrance from the vestibule to Image "THIS SEAT, on an open barren Estate, Was planned, planted, built, decorated And inhabited the middle of the XVIIIth Century by THOS COKE EARL OF LEICESTER" The tablet was erected by Lady Leicester in 1764, three years after completion of the Hall. Her husband had died in 1759 with debts of £90,000. Some of the lettering seems to have been recut, as evident in the two p's in the second line.

Holkham Hall at dusk
Many visitors to this grand mansion may be forgiven for thinking that the view of the building from this car parking area is the front of the property as it overlooks a beautiful lake. In fact it may be termed the 'tradesman's entrance' as the frontage is even more magnificent. The lawns are illuminated by car park lighting at dusk.

The Stone Hall at Holkham
Holkham Hall, one of England's most important country houses in the Palladian style, was built between 1731 and 1761 for Thomas Coke, first Earl of Leicester. The first impression inside is of immense grandeur. The hall, a 46 foot cube, is faced with polished pink alabaster from Derbyshire, supporting Ionic columns of the same material above a wave-pattern frieze. From it the two flights of the grand staircase lead up to the piano nobile.
