St Mary's church - medieval mensa slab
St Mary's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1399018 - http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1399029 is located some distance away from the busy Quidenham Road, adjoined by a woodland where once the village of Eccles stood. The church has a round tower which dates from Norman times and an early English chancel. A 14th century south aisle has been demolished at some time with the top parts of the arcades > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1399032 filled by frosted glass windows. The north porch, now blocked off, has an attractive outer arch supported by round pillars > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1399025. There is a double piscina in the chancel and the altar consists of a simple but very large original C15 mensa slab with 5 consecration crosses carved into it. The pulpit is Jacobean > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1399036 and the octagonal font > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1399038 dates from the 14th century.
