The Rose public house
As seen from the Ber Street/A147 road junction. The Rose is situated by the Queens Road (A147)/City Road junction. The first licence of this pub, which in 1879 and 1883 was known as the White Rose, was issued in 1856 to Richard Nichols, who was also a general shopkeeper. In August 1901 an application was made for permission to open at 5:30am for the benefit of workmen "because every house in the city had workmen passing at an early hour". The application was however refused on the grounds that there had been quite enough of such applications already.
