Snowberries (Symphoricarpos albus)
The Snowberry (also called Waxberry) is a member of the Honeysuckle Family and a native of North and Central America. Common Snowberry is a popular ornamental shrub that is grown in gardens for its decorative white fruit, which is an important winter food source for birds but is considered poisonous to humans. The berries contain the isoquinoline alkaloid chelidonine, as well as other alkaloids. Ingesting the berries results in mild symptoms of vomiting, dizziness, and slight sedation in children.
