Lloyds Bank, 54-55 Cross Street, Abergavenny
Grade II Listed bank. No.55 (left) was designed by A E Lloyd-Oswell and built as a bank in 1895-7. In 1933 no.54 was added in identical form. Originally there was one house here that was split into two in 1811 by William Williams. By 1850 no.55 had become the Vaults public house, Publican Ebenezer Michael. In 1895 Kelly's described it as 'Phillips William, miller (water), Priory mill, & Porter Stores P H', seemingly having changed its name in the 1860s. Williams had retained the larger half on the house, no.54 but died in 1816 when it was bought by Thomas Richards, timber merchant who was there until the late 1820s or early 1830s. Having had about six occupants after the Richards, from at least 1875 no.54 was an ironmongers followed c.1894 by a boot maker and c.1901 a cycle shop. In 1920 Abergavenny Cycle Company moved to no.52 and it was taken by a florist & nurseryman and remained so until it was demolished c.1933 although in 1927 Kelly's listed it as 'greengrocer, florist & seedsman'.
