Former town library, designed by local architect B J Francis and opened in 1906. Funding came from the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It closed in 2020, with a replacement opening the following year in the Town/Market Hall. Abergavenny Library foundation stone
The stone is embedded in a corner of this http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2130363 library. The foundation records that the architect was from the town, but the builder was from Kidderminster. Observers of minutiae will notice that the tail of the Q in ESQUIRE is pointing the wrong way, and the 3 Ns in ABERGAVENNNY in the lower left corner. If these errors were detected at the time, I guess they were minor enough to be acceptable. Otherwise a new stone would have had to be used.

The building that is now Abergavenny Cinema
I took this picture in 2009, but the building has since been transformed into a cinema for this thriving market town.

15 - 21 Baker Street
Late 19th Century terrace in Baker Street. The white painted building beyond, no 13, called The Livery, is a conversion of a former brewery dating from around 1840. Maps suggest that the brewery premises originally extended along the whole of this section of Bajer Street before the nearer part was replaced by the terrace seen here.

Baker Street Cinema, Abergavenny
Abergavenny did have two cinemas, one of which operated until the late 1980's or early 1990's and then was converted into a vertical drinking den (JD Wetherspoon's pub). The other became a bingo hall and is now an evangelical church. In the last couple of years a family have operated a two screen (I think) cinema here - a major venture for a non-chain set up. It is well supported I think. "Use it or lose it" is the mantra. The building is known as the drill hall locally - it was built as a Territorial Army meeting hall in Victorian times, pre the Boer War and the Great War, when martial organisations seemed a pretty positive thing. It later became a decorators retail outlet selling DIY stuff. Great to see a building get another lease of life.
