Barclays Bank, 57 Frogmore Street, Abergavenny
Grade II Listed bank built in 1892 for the Birmingham, District and Counties Bank and designed by local architect Edwin Arthur Johnson (d.1914). Formed in 1889 on the merger of Birmingham, Dudley and District Banking Co. it changed to United Counties Bank Ltd. in 1907. Barclays acquired the United Counties Bank in 1916. In 2010 the Abergavenny Chronicle & Gazette reporting on the bank's history states that "Frogmore House was bought for £1500, and the Bank immediately set about making plans for alterations. With contractor J G Thomas engaged to carry out the work, the project proceeded at last, and was finished by January 1893, having cost over £2600". This apparently well researched article seems to infer the building was already in existence, but not necessarily in its current form. The building at first included the manager's residence and the bank was run by the manager, Mr A W Hoskins, and two assistance.
