English Baptist Chapel, Broad Street, Blaenavon
Grade II Listed as Blaenavon Evangelical Church (Moriah Chapel) built in 1888. Given its proximity to the English border, there was a large proportion of the inhabitants of Blaenavon who spoke only English. The English speaking Baptists built their own church in Broad Street in 1844. It was extensively rebuilt with a more typically classical facade in 1888. Broad Street Church declined in membership and in the 1960s it ceased to be Baptist and became Moriah Evangelical Church. In 2019 the building became the home of Victory Church, Blaenavon an independent Pentecostal church run by Pastors Nick and Suzanne Walters. A school room was added to rear of church apparently before the rebuild as it seems to be present in 1882. The school room was to become Hawkins’ Corn Stores but that ceased trading in January 2018. Planning for conversion of the school room to a warehouse was approved in November 2018. The Grade II Listing of the school room is just a copy of the chapel listing.
