Yellow grit box on a Blaenavon corner
The contents of the grit box on the corner of Charles Street and Ton Mawr Road are used to treat the road surface in snowy or icy weather. This corner is 330 metres (c1,080 feet) above sea level.
The need to use the contents of a grit box typically occurs much more often here than in low-lying areas of South Wales. The elevation difference means that cold rain falling at 3 degrees Celsius at sea level will fall as snow and settle on the ground in Blaenavon at about 0 degrees Celsius.
