The Newport Clock, National Garden Festival, Ebbw Vale
Select https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7421803 to see it on the hour.
This mechanical clock was originally commissioned at a cost of £100,000 to represent Newport at the Ebbw Vale Garden Festival in 1992.
It is 31 feet high and on the hour would slowly open to reveal a moving display of skeletons, devils, cuckoos and angels in a cloud of steam.
It was designed by Andy Plant, a maker of interactive mechanical sculptures.
After the festival it was erected in John Frost Square, Newport https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7379437 and remained there until 2008 when the area was redeveloped.
It is now on a roundabout on the outskirts of Newport as a static display https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5729086 .
