Tutta Bella in Brynmawr
Viewed in February 2016. The South Wales Argus reported in August 2015 that Tutta Bella had been nominated as a High Street Hero in a Welsh Government campaign which aims to celebrate high streets across Wales. The Brynmawr shop was nominated as part of the Welsh Government's Support Your High Street campaign which highlights the role they play in community life and the economy.
It was hoped the campaign would encourage more people to use their local High Streets ahead of High Street Week (September 19-26 2015). The shop is run by former Spanish and Italian teacher Francesca Carpanini whose family have run High Street shops selling homewares, furniture and delicatessen goods for more than 30 years. Although the shop had been open for only three years, Ms Carpanini said people travel from afar to visit her shop.
A council spokesperson said that, unlike many of its neighbours, Brynmawr wasn't built on coal or iron but was a market town serving a wide area, a transport hub where formerly several railways connected and also a dormitory town. Like many town centres, out-of-town alternatives have made their mark but Brynmawr still fights on, continuing to attract visitors from the surrounding area. Shops like Tutta Bella are important to towns like Brynmawr because they attract visitors from a wide area, they encourage return visits and importantly for the town, they encourage secondary spending in other local businesses.
