The Church House Inn, Portland Street, Newport
Located on the corner of Portland Street and Broad Street. A blue plaque http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1792624 on the wall records that William Henry Davies (1871-1940), poet and author, was born here. W.H. Davies, one of the most popular poets of his time, spent a large part of his adult life as a tramp or hobo in the United States and United Kingdom. He is probably best known for the opening two lines of the poem Leisure, first published in 1911: What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

Blue plaque recording birthplace of W H Davies, Portland Street, Newport
The plaque is on the wall of The Church House Inn. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1792607 William Henry Davies (1871-1940), poet and author, was one of the most popular poets of his time. He spent a large part of his adult life as a tramp or hobo in the United States and United Kingdom. He is probably best known for the opening two lines of the poem Leisure, first published in 1911: What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. The proximity of a satellite dish to the plaque strikes a rather jarring note...

The entry on the National Monuments Record of Wales website (Coflein) states “Portland Street Methodist Chapel was built during the late nineteenth century in the Simple Round-Headed style of the gable-entry type.
