Ye Olde Murenger House
The building is dated at 1541 and is a Grade II Listed Building, possibly the town house of the first High Sheriff of Monmouthshire, Sir Charles Herbert. There is some uncertainty as to whether this was ever the house of a Murenger or just given the name in the 19th century. The Murenger was the official responsible for collecting and administering the duties on merchandise entering and leaving the town. The façade has changed over the years as it has undergone extensive repairs.

Olde Muringer House, Newport
The lower part of this building existed in 1533, and could have been built many years earlier. In the 16th century it was one of the homes of the High Sheriff of Monmouthshire. The sheriffs belonged to the influential Herbert family, descendants of the first Earl of Pembroke.
The building became a pub, called the Fleur-de-Lys, in the 17th century. It is now a Sam Smith pub.

Newport: High Street from high up
Looking along the High Street from a high level of the multi-storey car park above Queensway, the last of the late afternoon sun catching the gables from over the opposite neighbours.
St. Woolos cathedral, at the top of Stow Hill, is in the distance.
