Flea Market Today banner at the main entrance to Newport Indoor Market
Viewed across Upper Dock Street from Market Square Bus Station on Wednesday June 20th 2018. There are various theories about the origin of the phrase Flea Market. One is that it is a literal translation of the French marché aux puces, an outdoor bazaar in Paris, named after the parasites that infested the upholstery of old furniture on sale there.

The front of Newport Market building
A market building occupied the High Street end of the site from around 1817, but was too small by the middle of the century, and was extended to the new Upper Dock Street in 1865. In 1885 the Corporation of Newport purchased the site and built the present building which opened on 1 May 1889. This is Grade II listed
