Man of Gwent pub sign, Newport
The sign of the pub http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1545739 on Chepstow Road depicts an archer. Welsh longbowmen were a major element in the army of King Henry V at the battle of Agincourt (1415). Many of these were from Monmouthshire, the county of Henry's birth. Gwent, an ancient Welsh kingdom, is sometimes used as a synonym for the historic county of Monmouthshire. As a monosyllabic word, it is much used by local newspapers in preference to the trisyllabic name.
