Glan Llyn site office, Queen's Way, Newport
Glan Llyn is a major building project in the east of Newport. When completed, there will be 4,000 new houses and a 1.5 million sq ft (about 34 acres or 14 hectares) business park.
St Modwen, a regeneration specialist, signed an agreement with Newport City Council in 2010 which allowed plans for the redevelopment of the disused western part of Corus Llanwern steelworks into a £1 billion urban community to begin. St Modwen acquired the 600 acre disused section of the site from Corus in 2004.
Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport in the Welsh Assembly, said: "Whilst the Corus mills at Llanwern are still a significant employer in the area and remain integral to its Welsh operations, the development of the heavy end of the steelworks which closed in 2001 is an important step in the regeneration of the area. It will see new housing, new businesses and employment opportunities. Importantly it will improve the local infrastructure and provide a lasting legacy for the community."
The Glan Llyn development includes the building of two new primary schools with places for 600 children and a nursery. New footpaths and cycleways will link Glan Llyn with the nearby comprehensive schools, Hartridge High School and Liswerry High School. St Modwen has also made a multi-million pound commitment to develop and improve the local infrastructure, including new access roads to and from the site.
