Radford House, Broadway, Caerleon
Grade II Listed house from the mid 18th century but altered mid 19th century on the front elevation and in the 20th century on the garden elevation. The gates and railings are also listed, probably installed as part of the 19th century alterations. The 1951 listing names it Priory House but it has been Radford House B&B from 2005 up to late 2016 after which the website reported 'closed due to retirement'. A letter was found in the roof of the house dated 28th March 1643 from Ed Herbert instructing Captain Thomas Morgan to remain and secure the town of Chepstow. Could this suggest an earlier core or a previous building? Historical traditions and facts relating to Newport and Caerleon by Charles Octavius S Morgan published in 1880 refers to the 'old building now known as the Priory House' and that the Abbey of Llantarnam placed an abbot in Caerleon and speculates this could be his town house, accounting for the name. If this is based in any fact, it must surely have been a previous building.
