Bilingual place name, Mathern
Most people have heard of Merthyr Tydfil, but it was only when I went out for these pictures that I discovered this "Merthyr". I checked the BBC dictionary of place names, and "Merthyr" means "Sanctified cemetery; church consecrated by saint's bones". The church is indeed dedicated to St. Tewdric. http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/whatsinaname/

A tribute in flowers
The Mathern war memorial used to be a fairly plain enclosure on the main road, but the village has taken to flowers in a big way - winning many awards along the way. Here a planter bears a reference to the centenary of the end of WWI; other planters have similar texts.

Mathern war memorial
Mathern's men who served in WWI and WWII are recorded here on the memorial. It is a Fleury cross set on a tapering octagonal shaft and three octagonal steps, made from Bath stone. Designed by Eric Francis and H. Avery Tipping, it was presented in a ceremony on 23rd May, 1920. In common with much of the rest of the village, it has a pronounced floral display. Grade II listed.
