Four furlong post, Chepstow Racecourse
Looking north along the racecourse, past the four furlong post, which marks the distance exactly half a mile from the starting point. A furlong, an eighth of a mile, is now little use as a measurement, except in horse racing.

The three furlong post, Chepstow Racecourse
Looking north past the post marking 3 furlongs (660 yards) from the start of the race track. There are two courses side by side at Chepstow. Nearest the camera is the track for flat racing (no hurdles). Flat races of one mile or less use the straight track ahead. Longer flat races use the straight for about the first five furlongs, then use the track curving to the right. The jumps course is inside the flat course.

Two parallel racing tracks at Chepstow Racecourse
Nearer the camera is the course used for flat racing. The track on the far side on the central white fence is for jumps. Horses run clockwise around the tracks, which is from right to left in this view.
