Small grindstone
The entrance to Usk Castle is littered with all sorts of interesting things. I haven't seen one of these for decades - several decades unfortunately.

They should be so lucky
A highly original gate fashioned from many horseshoes makes a striking entrance to a private garden near Usk Castle.
I counted 60 but you are welcome to check!

Very classy dog flap
I suppose if you live in a house next to a castle you need your own portcullis.
It has the added advantage of giving your back a good scratch as you enter and exit the premises. Nice touch - whoever thought of this should know I was chuckling all day.

Please put 1 stone in the bowl
How visitors are counted at the privately owned Usk Castle. Much more fun than taking a ticket from a machine. Take a stone from the jar and pop it into the bowl. Drop your contribution into the cash box and enter the castle. Easy.

Fashioned from some kind of old fruit press - one of many quirky features of the gardens around the privately owned castle.

Ruins of the Great Keep, Usk Castle
Originally the Gate House, the Great Keep was the work of Richard "Strongbow" de Clare and dates from about 1170, although it is much altered since that time.

Inside a castle keep
The castle at Usk is full of hidden delights so when I popped my head inside the Great Keep I was not surprised to find a pink hydrangea as tall as me flourishing in a cool corner. Large, flamboyant blooms, totally at home in their awesome setting. See also

Graves of much-loved pets
And there are many of them - each with a proper headstone and inscription. There's even a carved pooch watching over them as they lie by the Great Keep at Usk Castle.

Usk: snowdrops on the castle slopes
Looking down from the castle gate towards the property whose back garden includes the castle itself.
The castle is a privately owned property - essentially part of a back garden - but is open to the public at any reasonable hour. Its official website is here: http://www.uskcastle.com/castle/ ’
