Railway line heading south east from Lower Machen
Viewed from the bridge adjacent to Old Station House, the single track line heads for Rhiwderin. Formerly a passenger route, the line remains in use to connect Machen quarry with Park Junction, Newport. The quarry provides ballast for the western region of Network Rail.

Footpath alongside Caerphilly Road
There is a footpath - of sorts - alongside the northern edge of this section of Caerphilly Road, between Lower Machen and Machen-fach Farm.
The concrete base has been invaded by grass in patches, and puddles have nowhere to drain away. There will be little evaporation on this wintry April 1st 2010.

The 'welcome' written in red on the notice at the entrance to Maendy-fach did nothing to change my plan of keeping on the main country route, and leaving exploration of side routes for another time.
