Former estate cottages in Sywell
Dating from 1860-1864 when the village was rebuilt by the "Good Lady Overstone". See: Image Each house has its privy, pigsty, manure pit and garden plot. At least one block had its own bakehouse-cum-laundry room and a pump supplied by a soft-water tank under the yard, fed by rainwater from the roof. Some of the houses have quirky features: the one I knew was in the middle of the block and looked the smallest, but it had a room extending into each of the houses on either side, I think the rooms must have been under their stairs. Another quirk was the roof, not one ridge across the centre but two parallel, with a "valley" in the middle, closed off by the sloping roofs on either side. A big pipe ran down through the house to take the water away, and to the soft water tank which was under the back yard, the whole width of it. There was a pump outside for the water, which obviously you couldn't drink. In heavy rain the water backed up and ran through the hall and kitchen.
