The tower was formerly known as the Express Lift Tower and is named as such in its English Heritage entry. A full description of the services offered is given at https://nationallifttower.com/ . The image was taken from Castle Gardens. The tower is about 1200 metres (1310 yards or ¾ miles) away. It stands in the middle of a housing estate. It is grade II listed. The roofs in the middle distance are those of Northampton station.

Northampton 'Lighthouse'
This is the National Lift Tower locally known as the Northampton Lighthouse. It was built by the Express Lift Company, opening in 1982. It was used for testing all kinds of lifts, but went out of use when Express was taken over by American company Otis. It was saved by the developers of the site and has now re-opened as a testing centre for all kinds of items (even drains for high rise buildings) as well as lifts. It is also used for abseiling and communication purposes. The tower, now a Grade II listed structure is 128m tall and is visible over a wide area.

Lift testing tower, Northampton
It is now in the middle of a housing estate, so is it still functional? The view is across extensive car parks, empty, with an air of little use if any. There are sporting venues fairly nearby, but the parking provision seems very generous. What was the idea?

The Lift Tower also known as the Northampton Lighthouse
This building in the St James area of Northampton near the rugby ground was formerly a lift testing tower and is now undergoing major repair. Many refer to it as the 'Lighthouse'.

Lift Tower Northampton
Built to test lifts by the Express Lift Company, decommissioned when Otis lifts took over. Sold to a house building company who built so close as to prevent any demolition. Concrete cancer was discovered on a routine inspection and it now needs a protective covering. It is alleged that the tower may be used again for its original purpose. An unmissable landmark that regularly features as the Northampton lighthouse in the letters to Terry Wogan on Radio 2. There appears to be communication equipment on top of the building and you certainly get a strong phone signal close by.

The lift tower at St James, Northampton
My photo has been taken from Sixfields Lakes. Nicknamed "The Northampton Lighthouse", the Express Lifts Tower is a listed building, but currently under threat of demolition due to suspected "concrete cancer".
