Market Square, Northampton
A Sunday afternoon and there are few people about in Northampton's large market square. Most of Northampton's very old buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1675, but various architectural styles have since made their mark on the town - including some unfortunate products of the 1960s such as the multi-storey car park.

Market Square
With the newly-installed fountain in the foreground. The original fountain was demolished in the 1960s. Dating back to 1235, Northampton's Market Square is one of the oldest in England, although it was nearly 300 years later that it was first paved, in 1530. That's the Borough Council for you! In the 16th and 17th century it became illegal for "butchers or fishmongers wives" to "fall out with one another". The market has been the scene of large livestock fairs, unsuccessful balloon launches, bizarre trapeze-related deaths and riots.
