The Malt Shovel, Northampton
Pub serving a wide range of real ales on Bridge Street to the south of the town centre. The pub was originally built in 1914, replacing an older establishment demolished as part of a road widening scheme - Bridge Street has always been the main thoroughfare into the town from the south. It was the brewery tap for the old Northampton Brewery which stood opposite - a site now occupied by the vast Carlsberg brewery. The pub has had various names over the years, including the Tudor House and Barney Rubbles, but was re-named the Malt Shovel by the present owners when it was acquired in 1996.

Carlsberg Brewery
There has been a brewery on this site since 1817, although it has only produced lager since 1974. See

Northampton, Carlsberg Brewery
On Bridge Street, on the site once used by Phipps & NBC. Sadly, no cask ale is brewed here. http://www.carlsberggroup.com/Markets/WE/Pages/UnitedKingdom.aspx

Northampton, Malt Shovel Tavern
Good Beer Guide-listed public house on Bridge Street; bar to right, eating and drinking areas left and back. Glassware on the frontage shows signage from NBC; the interior is crammed with breweriana - signs, trays and jugs. Seven cask ales were on offer at my visit, with a wide range of Belgian ales in addition.
