Nineteenth-century benchmark in Sheaf Street
This bench mark on 22 Sheaf Street was established in 1848 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 486.149 feet [148.178 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Birmingham to London levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 118. Bolt in North corner of John Wise's house in Sheaf-street, Daventry ; 2.46 ft. above centre of road" (Public Abstract p.223) It is shown on the 1884 OS map.
