Daventry: Edgehill Drive
Up to now all 23 submitted images of this grid square feature some aspect of the Grand Union Canal. Well, here's something different. The residential development of Daventry just clips into this grid square here, looking up the tree-lined avenue to Edgehill Drive.

Inside Braunston Tunnel, Northamptonshire
This tunnel on the Grand Union Canal is wide enough to allow two narrowboats to pass in opposite directions (with care!). Wide beam boats ( up to 12ft 6in) must get permission in advance before entering the tunnel. The tunnel is 2042 yards long (about 1867 metres), and was opened in 1796. Construction was hindered by quicksands. A directional error during the building resulted in the course having a slight S bend. This image shows the tunnel looking eastwards about 100 metres in from the western portal.

Braunston Tunnel Eastern Portal
Braunston Tunnel is 2,042 yards (1,867m) long. Built by Jessop and Barnes and completed in 1796, the tunnel has no towpath and is 4.8m wide by 3.76m high.
Construction was delayed by soil movement which has left the tunnel with a slight 'S' bend. There is room for two 7ft (2.13m) beam boats to pass. There are three air shafts along its length.
The tunnel passes underground alongside another Grand Union Canal feature, Drayton Reservoir, from which the feeder enters the canal at the east end of the tunnel.
