The Star Inn, Beeston - etched glass
The front windows of the Star Inn on Middle Street make clear the name of the former owners. Shipstone's was something of a Nottingham institution - its beers were brewed at the Star Brewery in New Basford and sold through a vast estate of pubs in the region. Some of these were delivered using horse drawn drays well into the 1960s. However, the business was sold to Greenall's of Warrington in 1978 who continued to brew Shipstone's beer in Nottingham until the brewery was closed down in 1991. A version of the beer was produced at Burton on Trent for a few years but eventually the brand disappeared. That wasn't quite the end of the story; in 2013 a small brewery at Old Dalby in Leicestershire began to produce Shipstone's ales using the original recipes and production was later moved to a micro-brewery in Old Basford (the Little Star Brewery). So Shipstone's beers can still be found in and around Nottingham even though they will never be as ubiquitous as they once were.
