This building formed the original school, much expanded since, and represents the typical 19th century private high school aiming to follow in the footsteps of the established public schools.

The school was founded in 1513 by one Dame Agnes Mellers, although these premises date from Victorian times. Seen here from Arboretum Street, the striking gothic style building occupies a commanding location on a high ridge overlooking the city.

A First World War soldier stands over the war memorial at the Arboretum Street entrance to the school. The independent school was founded in 1513 and caters for boys between the ages of 11 and 18; there is also a separate junior school on the same site.
