Highbury Vale: bridge over the River Leen
There is more to this rainy-morning picture than meets the eye. In years gone by, there was a brick viaduct here, carrying the Great Northern Railway line from Nottingham to Derby Friargate high above the river. The lattice bridge, which is exactly on the alignment of the railway, itself has a railway provenance: it is part of a longer footbridge which crossed a cutting on the Great Central main line (now equally obliterated) at Paton Road, about half a mile away off Hucknall Road.
