Sign for the Three Horseshoes
Horseshoes normally come in sets of four, but it is suggested that those horses being brought to the farrier's near the village inn of this name would normally have been going there because they were minus one shoe.
The real explanation of the name has more to do with heraldry, referring to the Worshipful Company of Farriers (1673) and to the Ferrers family, earls of Derby.
