A bit of a mixture of eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century work but an important building in the townscape of Sleaford.

South Gate, Sleaford
South Gate entrance to the Bristol Arcade. Not sure if Bristol has a Sleaford Arcade. Towns come up with all sorts of ideas to encourage people to visit. Pedestrian areas, arcades, pretty trees, masses of flowers, artwork, town walks, etc. One thing they hardly ever consider is having somewhere to sit down and take the weight off your feet.

This 1874 Grade II Listed fountain designed by Charles Kirk, of Kirk and Parry, was erected in memory of Frederick William, 6th Earl and 2nd Marquis of Bristol, by a few of his Lincolnshire tenantry.

Restored Sleaford Water Fountain
After over £40,000 worth of work on this neglected structure (see Image), the Sleaford and District Civic Trust via the Bristol Water Fountain (BWF) Restoration Project has restored the fountain, from which potable water can again be obtained, after a gap of 92 years, at the press of a button. The carved inscription reads "In memory of Frederick William sixth Earl and second Marquis of Bristol, by a few of his Lincolnshire tenants erected in the year of our Lord 1874". The 'business end' of the fountain comprises a cast iron front inscribed "T KENNEDY PATENTEE" "KILMARNOCK". (Well they do say that Scotland has the best 'watter'!)

Free "Watter"
Fill up your re-usable bottles with clean, fresh watter (or 'watter, as the locals pronounce it) from the recently-restored Bristol Water Fountain. The last time anyone had taken water from the fountain was in 1927, when the supply was turned off as many local springs had dried up. See Image for more details. Unfortunately for our four-legged friends, the nearby dog drinking fountain still remains as dry as a bone. Image
