Woolsthorpe Manor [6]
A descendant of the apple tree that inspired Newton's law of universal gravitation.
Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth is a hamlet near the southern border of Lincolnshire. It is some 10 miles northwest of Stamford and about 7 miles south of Grantham. It is home to Woolsthorpe Manor, the birthplace and family home of Sir Isaac Newton. Here, he performed many experiments, most notably on light and optics. Here is said to be the site where, observing an apple fall from a tree, he formulated his law of universal gravitation. The manor is now in the care of the National Trust.

Woolsthorpe: steps on the Skillington footpath
The footpath crosses the trackbed of the High Dyke Branch. The steps lead down what was once an ironstone quarry face (Colsterworth North Quarry). See other photos nearby for more on the quarries and railways of the area.

Trees in garden of Woolsthorpe Manor
Woolsthorpe Manor was the birthplace of Isaac Newton, although he returned here during the plague when the University of Cambridge was closed. Many of his optics experiments were carried out here, and the infamous apple tree was found in this garden. Whilst the original tree has long since died, part of it rerooted and forms the tree surrounded by the fence here. A plaque below the tree describes this as one of 50 Great British Trees.
