Bench mark, Church of St Mary, North Witham

The Church of St Mary: Saxon cross shaft
In the porch is this Saxon cross shaft, dating from the late 10th/early 11th century. It was discovered in 1887 during restoration work in the church, and has been in the porch ever since.

View from the gate into the churchyard, complete with Yews. The roof (rebuilt in 1977) is covered with sheeting because metal thieves had stripped the lead, over a period of 3 nights, a couple of weeks ago.
