The castle mound at Castle Bytham, near Bourne, Lincolnshire
The great earthwork at Castle Bytham is all that remains of a castle built by Norman lords but long since vanished. The huge grassy site is still an impressive spectacle and it is not difficult to picture a strong fortress standing here, dating back to the Norman invasion of Saxon England but today occupied only by sheep.

Pleasure in the village
The "party field" if you will forgive the comparison with Hobbiton. Castle Bytham is having its village fair. The mound of the Motte and Bailey is behind all the jolly tents.

Remains of castle precincts, Castle Bytham
Substantial visible earthworks. The listing reads " The earthwork remains of the castle are adjoined by those of an elaborate water control system constructed on the original course of the river and composed of a series of artificial channels and ponds linked by dams and sluices; this system served a combination of defensive, symbolic and economic functions associated with the castle, including fish rearing and milling."
