The Tham in spate
The stream from Castle Bytham through Little Bytham is known locally as 'The Tham', thought by scholars to be a back-formation from 'Bytham', which is supposed to mean something else. On the OS maps it is named 'Glen Brook', and it joins the River Glen on the other side of the railway line. Here in Church Lane it is crossed by a ford, normally a clear trickle but here brown and hurried, in spate after heavy rains on the 23rd of December. (see Image] for the normal state).

A long way to go
The depth board needs reading with some caution : I would estimate there is nearly two feet of water in the middle of the ford. But there is a way to go: I have seen it at the 5 foot mark years ago.

The ford at Little Bytham, near Bourne, Lincolnshire
The West Glen River meanders its way around Little Bytham and there is a picturesque ford as you enter the village from the east, a shallow place in the waterway that allows one to drive across in safety to Church Lane beyond.

Cottages in Church Lane
The cottage in the distance is the home and business of a chap who specialises in the repair of Collyweston roofs. When I was a young man it was the home and yard of a scrap metal dealer known all around as "Old Father Cole".
