A story to be told
Just another gravestone, in just another country churchyard. They all tell of a life, but this one seems to be a story waiting to be told. "In loving memory of Harold Ernest Sharpe D.C.M. Croix de Guerre 1896-1985 Rest in peace And his dear wife Barbara Eleanor 1911-1994 reunited" Harold is recorded as coming from nearby Little Bytham, and Barbara (nee Bacon) from Swayfield, where they are buried. OK, we have a young man awarded a French military honour, presumably during the First World War. He would have been 22 years old when the armistice occurred. At that date, Barbara was 7 years old. The very earliest they could have married is 8 years later, when he was 30 - not that far off twice her age. But in fact their marriage is recorded in 1941, in Bourne. The rest of the story I obviously do not know. But I do know this. This is in no wise unique. Quiet graves in quiet churchyards are filled with stories like this, unexpected heroes in unlikely places; quiet lifelong devotion; good people. The stuff of the English countryside, a continuum over several thousand years. (Thanks to fellow Geographist Penny Mayes for the birth and marriage records)
