Nottingham - NG1 (Sneinton)
The long-defunct Peggers Inn standing on the edge of the former Sneinton Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market. It is seen here across Southwell Road (B686) from a corner of Manvers Street (A612). It was opened in 1833 as The Fox and Grapes but was renamed later as “The Pretty Windows” - date unknown - in light of the decorative glazing in its bar windows. It was licensed to open at 5.00a.m. each morning to allow market vendors and porters to quench their thirsts. Interestingly it was the scene of a gruesome murder in 1963 involving the fatal stabbing of the landlord, George Wilson, a crime that has remained unsolved. In the 1980s it was relaunched, for some unknown reason, as The Peggars Inn but it closed c.2007. Now however, plans to reopen it in September 2017 under its original name seem to be on target.

Sneinton Road and Bath Street
Part of the former Sneinton Wholesale Market is in the middle distance. Beyond is the clock tower of Victoria Leisure Centre (originally Victoria Baths) on the other side of the retail market place, and beyond that the distinctive Grade II listed Park View Tenement of 1876, with its gothic-arched open stairwells and pyramidal spirelets.

Nottingham in the 1980s - Sneinton Market
Taken from Sneinton Road. Shipstone's Smith's Arms on the extreme left had become the New Castle by 2020, but other than that the scene was not greatly changed nearly 40 years later.

Southwell Road, Nottingham
A bus from Southwell travels along the very short Southwell Road in Nottingham. The building immediately behind the bus is part of the block that houses the offices associated with Nottingham City Transport's huge Parliament Street garage, though I am unsure whether the NCT offices continue this far along the building. The prominent building in the left background, presumably a former bank, appears to have outlived other contemporary buildings on that part of Manvers Street.

Sneinton Market: the Pretty Windows
The Fox and Grapes public house, as it once was, is remembered for the Pretty Windows murder - the licensee was killed in 1963 and the case remains unsolved. The view is from the corner of Manvers Street, and also shows two of the refurbished avenues of the former wholesale fruit and vegetable market, now part of Nottingham's "Creative Quarter".

The Fox and Grapes alive again
Remarkably, after standing empty for at least 10 years http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/674434 , this pub has reopened, under its original name, as part of the local Castle Rock Brewery chain.
