A J39 0-6-0 on Grantham Shed
There were 289 of these large 0-6-0's designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the LNER: they were generally useful for freight, and at times for passenger, work, throughout the system. No. 4965 was one of several allocated to Grantham Shed.

An ex-Works Thompson K1 2-6-0 at Grantham Locomotive Depot
View westward, from Grantham station, ex-Great Northern ECML. The Depot was over to the left of K1 No. 62028 - a Blaydon engine probably just out of Doncaster Works, shining in fresh lined-black livery. Grantham was one of the principal Depots on the ECML - especially for express locomotives. Coded 35B in the Peterborough Division, in 1954 the allocation was 50, comprising:- 18 4-6-2, 8 4-6-0, 14 2-8-0, 3 0-6-0, 2 4-6-2T, 2 4-4-2T and 3 0-6-0T.

Thompson Class A2 Pacific at Grantham Locomotive Depot
View SE in the Depot, which adjoined the Station on the ex-Great Northern East Coast Main Line. This is Class A2/3 No. 517 'Ocean Swell', only six months old. The occasion was one of my earliest Shed Visits and a very early photographic effort on my part. The engine had come down from Heaton Depot in Newcastle, where I had worked briefly in 1944.
