West Bridgford: flowery Central Avenue
Older Nottinghamians may remember that Iceland, on the left, was originally Fine Fare, one of Nottingham's first self-service stores. When I was young Specsavers was occupied by Ethel Llewellyn, a genteel dress shop. The concrete bus shelters of those times are long gone, like West Bridgford UDC's double-deck buses.

The bus service into Nottingham City centre is frequent and efficient. Union flags have been strung from the railings, ahead of the Platinum Jubilee, when Central Avenue will be closed.

West Bridgford: (after) dinner for one
The busy Felicini restaurant and bar. My grandmother, who lived in Bridgford from the 1880s to the 1960s, would have been surprised to find a restaurant of any kind, let alone an Italian one, in Central Avenue. (Felicini - which in June 2013 became Mud Crab, with American and Australian dishes - is the square grey building shown on the left-hand side of the road in Image)

West Bridgford: Covid queuing outside Birds
An orderly queue of Bridgfordians had formed outside the Central Avenue branch of Birds, a splendid East Midlands institution. Reassuringly, sausage rolls and iced buns appeared more popular than the maths and English tuition offered next door....
